Grant Making that Gets Things Done

Team Rubicon

How many times have you seen a news reporter describe the aftermath of a hurricane, earthquake, or tornado as a “war zone?”  Television footage of the recent tornados that ravaged rural Alabama revealed such battlefield-like images.

Natural disasters bring great pain and grief.  Yet the aftermath of these events often reveals incredible acts of unselfishness and charity.  Increasingly, post-disaster relief also reveals Team Rubicon volunteers in action.

Who better to help bring order to such chaotic and gruesome environments than former members of the military who are all-too-familiar with real battlefields?  The skill-sets and small-unit leadership of these volunteers learned as part of their military service transfer directly to disaster relief operations.

Team Rubicon, a U.S.-based nonprofit, recruits, trains, and deploys military veterans to continue their service by working with first responders to help underserved communities recover from catastrophic events.  Disaster victims, many of whom lack home insurance, benefit.

But so do veterans.   Team Rubicon says its veteran volunteers “regain the purpose, community, and identity that is difficult to find upon leaving the armed forces.”

In 2017, the organization deployed more than 4,000 volunteers to help with more than 60 natural disasters in the U.S.

According to data published by the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are more than 1.5 million nonprofits in the United States.

Sifting through those to find out which ones produce transformative Team Rubicon-like results can be time-consuming and overwhelming. But that is our specialty.
