Recidiviz Awarded National Prize in Venture Philanthropy

San Diego, CA— [December 3, 2021]— Recidiviz, a nonprofit using technology to create a smaller, safer, and more equitable criminal justice system, was named the winner of the 2021 Gregor G. Peterson Prize in Venture Philanthropy.  Founded in 2018 by Clementine Jacoby, Joshua Essex, and Andrew Warren, Recidiviz was selected by the Peterson family from a pool of sixty nonprofit nominees nationally.

The award was presented on Friday morning, December 3, at the ALEC 2021 States & Nation Policy Summit in San Diego, California.

“We are very excited to be chosen by the Peterson family,” said Clementine Jacoby, Recidiviz’s Executive Director.  “The Recidiviz team has worked hard to provide the data criminal justice decision makers need to identify issues and address them, helping improve outcomes, save tax-payer dollars, drive meaningful change for people and their families, and restore communities.  This award recognizes the efforts of our team and our partners and helps accelerate our mission.”

Recidiviz builds modern data tools to help corrections agencies get a clear, real-time picture of what’s driving prison admissions, length of stay, recidivism, and other key metrics.  North Dakota, Idaho, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Michigan have been early adopters of the platform, and Recidiviz is now onboarding a new cohort of states.

“The work Recidiviz does has never been more important than today,” said Eric Peterson, son of the Prize’s namesake, Greg Peterson.  “That’s why we are proud to name this pioneering nonprofit the winner of this award—its work to help agencies create a criminal justice system that is both smaller and fairer is something all of us as Americans can agree needs to be done.”

The $250,000 prize honors Greg Peterson’s core business principles—including teamwork, innovation, and an entrepreneurial spirit—and applies these values to the nonprofit sector.  Peterson was a pioneer in the field of venture capital from the San Francisco Bay Area.
